Active Listening
Active listening requires your complete engagement in the situation. Here are some things you can do to become an active listener.
Think about the speaker’s purpose before, during, and after the presentation.
Use your prior knowledge of the speaker and their purpose to evaluate what you hear. Note body language, tone of voice, and the speaker’s personality to interpret the real meaning of the message.
Make eye-contact with the speaker to show that you are paying attention. Lean slightly towards the speaker, and be appropriately responsive.
Take notes whenever necessary to help you remember detailed or important information.
Ask questions and make comments when appropriate. Be sure to use a proper tone, and remain on-topic and relevant.
Arrive early to formal situations, and sit in the front of the room. You will be able to see and hear better, and will be more easily able to participate.
Never engage in text messaging or answering your cell phone while listening to a speaker.
Avoid both environmental distractions and internal distractions. Concentrate fully and sincerely on the speaker.
